PREFACE.
My chief authority for the facts which areinterwoven with the fiction of this story isFox, among whose horrors many curious andinteresting accounts of the peculiar doctrinesof the so-called Lollards may be found.Their views on the Sacraments and someother points did not entirely agree with thoseof the great Reformers, but their purity of life, their love for the Bible and devotion to thecause of religious liberty, will entitle thisspiritual awakening to be called the dawnof the Reformation. Its political aspect--thougha very important one--I have avoidedentering upon in this volume, and thereforethe trial of Cobham and his companions hasbeen very imperfectly described, but the fullaccount of it which Fox gives will be foundto be very interesting in an historical as wellas religious point of view.
